SUNY New Paltz Women’s Tennis Team Falls to Vassar
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team lost for only the second time this season to the 2004 New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Champions (NYWSCAA) Vassar College 9-0 today. The Hawks fall to 8-2 overall, while the Brewers advance to 4-1 on the season.
SUNY New Paltz got off to a rough start with first singles when sophomore Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Freshman, Dana Lim (New City, NY), fell in straight set to Kelly Barnett (Toronto, ON) at number two, and freshman Katherine Ketigian (Garden City, NY) lost the third decision to Kathryn Robinette (Pine Bluff, AR) 6-1 and 6-0. Senior Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) lost a tough set to Krista Romita(Baltimore, MD) 6-3, 7-5 at number four singles for the Hawks. Junior Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY) fell at number five singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while freshman Brittany Gilligan (Saratoga Springs, NY) was defeated at number six singles, 6-0 and 6-0.
At number one doubles Yamakawa and Lim lost for the second time this season to Debbie Sharnak (East Brunswick, NJ) and Kelly Graham (Kennebunk, ME) 8-0. The Hawks Fenton and Larson lost at number two doubles 8-1. Sisters, Ashley and Lindsay Triffiletti (Mamaroneck, NY), took their second loss at number three doubles 8-1.
The SUNY New Paltz (8-2, 5-1) women’s tennis team will compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament (SUNYAC) on Friday, October 7, 2005. The Hawks are ranked second in the conference and will look to topple conference rival and defending SUNYAC Champions Cortland.
