SUNY New Paltz Volleyball Improves to 8-2 in SUNYAC
POTSDAM, NY — This afternoon the SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team continued play at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Round Robin hosted by Potsdam. Yesterday, the Hawks (23-8, 8-2) finished with a win over Plattsburgh and a loss to conference rival Cortland.
This afternoon, the Hawks met Oneonta in the early match. SUNY New Paltz made short work of Oneonta with a three game sweep 30-25, 30-26, and 30-22. Senior middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) recorded 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) set the tone for the Hawks offense with 29 assists, while junior outside hitter Franchesca Rodriguez (Schenectady, NY) tallied seven kills and 18 digs.
In the later game, SUNY New Paltz battled Potsdam. After losing the first match 26-30, the Hawks rallied back to sweep the next three matches 30-17, 30-15, and 30-21. Mazurowski and senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) led the Hawk?s attack with 12 and 14 kills respectively. Mazurowski lead the defense with nine blocks, senior libero Christina Butcher (North Salem, NY) contributed 26 digs, and Kaiser totaled14 digs for the Hawks. Becofsky registered 36 assists.
In the third match of the evening the Hawks swept SUNY IT in three straight matches 30-5,30-8, and 30-19. Mazurowski tallied 13 kills and 3 blocks and Kaiser collected 7 kills. Junior setter Jennifer Hembury (Montgomery, NY) lead the offense for New Paltz with 23 assists.
With this afternoon’s victories, the Hawks have secured the number two seed in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament on November 4th and 5th at Cortland.
