SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team Losses to Skidmore
KINGSTON, NY — This evening the SUNY New Paltz (2-8) field hockey team fell to 5-2 to undefeated Skidmore. Skidmore (9-0) was ranked seventh in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.
In the first half, the Thoroughbreds jumped out to and early two-goal lead. At the 19-minute mark sophomore forward Jessica Bergen (Wells, VT) laced a shot from the right side and gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead. Skidmore would push their advantage to 2-0 by halftime with a goal from senior midfielder Emily Clark (Saratoga, NY).
The Thoroughbreds carried their strong offensive play into the second half, netting three goals in the first 15 minutes. Junior forward Katie Weber (Princeton, NJ) tallied two goals in the second half. Senior forward Anne Ledyard (West Grove, PA) added the other Thoroughbred goal after assisting on Weber’s first goal.
SUNY New Paltz added two goals in the later part of the second half. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Ruggiero (Carmel, NY) received a pass from senior midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) with 16:01 remaining in the game to put the Hawks on the board. Wong would score an unassisted goal eight minutes later to cut the Thoroughbred lead to three. Skidmore’s defense, however, quieted the Hawk’s rally and ensured the 5-2 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) recorded nine saves in the loss. Skidmore freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Reed (Barker, NY) made three saves and earned her ninth win.
