SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team Gains First Conference Win

OSWEGO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team faced off against conference rival Oswego today at the South Athletic Complex. Although the Hawks (4-8, 1-3) had a rought start to their season, they are currently in the mist of a two game winning streak. SUNY New Paltz captured their first conference win of 2005 defeating Oswego(0-10, 0-4)by a score of 2-1 in overtime.

Junior midfielder Kelly Proper (Red Hook, NY) got SUNY New Paltz on the board scoring the first goal of the game. The Lakers retaliated scoring the game tieing goal. The Hawk?s defense maintained the tie and shutout the Lakers for the duration of the second period and overtime.

In overtime, Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) feathered a perfect pass to an open sophmore forward Ashley Smith (Selden, NY) who fired the game winning goal into the cage.

Leading the defensive efforts for the Hawks was junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) who held the Lakers to one goal in regulation.

The Hawks will try to extend their winning streak to three games when they will travel to battle #8 ranked Cortland.
