The SUNY New Paltz Women’s Tennis Team Falls to Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz (5-1, 3-1) women’s tennis team took a tough 3-6 loss to conference rival Cortland (7-1, 3-0) this afternoon. Battling their fiercest competitors of the season, the Hawks played with poise and determination displaying their best performance to date.

At number one singles for the Hawks, sophomore Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) was defeated 2-6, 2-6 by the Red Dragons Laurie Dorscheid (Fairport, NY). Freshman, Dana Lim (New City, NY), lost 7-5, 1-6. Freshman Katherine Ketigian (Garden City, NY) came up short against Cortland’s Ashley Abar (Champlain, NY) 1-6, 0-6. Senior Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) lost a heartbreaker to Andrea TerBush(Liberty, NY) 0-6, 6-2, 4-6,at number four singles for the Hawks. Junior Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY) took number five singles in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Meredith McCaslin (Babylon, NY). Freshman Brittany Gilligan (Saratoga Springs, NY) lost number six singles 7-5,5-7,1-6.

At number one doubles Yamakawa and Lim captured an impressive 8-6 win. The Hawks Fenton and Larson won at number two doubles 8-1. Sisters, Ashley and Lindsay Triffiletti (Mamaroneck, NY), took their first loss at number three doubles 3-8.

The SUNY New Paltz (5-1, 3-1) women’s tennis team will travel to William Smith to compete in the ITA Tournament on Friday, September 23.
