SUNY New Paltz Women’s Volleyball Leaves Red Dragon Classic 2-2

CORTLAND, NY — This afternoon the SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team continued into the Gold Bracket, second round, of the Red Dragon Classic, hosted by Cortland.

The Hawks fell to Skidmore 3-1 in the early match. SUNY New Paltz dropped the opening game 27-30 before rallying to win game two 30-25. The Thoroughbreds, however, proved to be too much for SUNY New Paltz, winning the last two games 30-24 and 30-21. Skidmore (3-1) would go on to win the Gold Bracket.

Junior Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) and senior outside hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) led the Hawkýs attack with 14 and 11 kills respectively. Mazurowski added five blocks to go along with junior teammate Kate Roche (Patchogue, NY), who totaled six blocks, and senior libero Christina Butcher (North Salem, NY) contributed 24 digs in the Hawk’s defense. Sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) registered 38 assists.

In the second match of the evening the Hawks played Nazareth (1-3). SUNY New Paltz (2-2) took the first game 30-24, dropped the second 25-30, but battled in the third and fourth games, 30-28 and 32-30, to pull out the 3-1 victory. Becofsky paced the Hawks offense with 42 assists, as senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) put home 16 kills. Mazurowski totaled eight blocks and Butcher added 33 digs on defense.

SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team will play their next match on the road against Stevens Tech. on Wednesday, September 7.
