SUNY New Paltz Women’s Soccer Team Blanks Buffalo State

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team captured their first conference win this afternoon defeating Buffalo State 1-0.

With less than 27 minutes remaining in the game, the Hawk’s (3-1-1, 1-1) sophomore midfielder Lauren Martel (West Sayville, NY) broke into the box and threaded a shot past oncoming sophomore goalkeeper Katie Melsert (Burnt Hills, NY) to put SUNY New Paltz on top 1-0. The Bengal’s (4-1-1, 0-1) defense remained determined to even the score, but the Hawks defense held solid to secure the victory.

In the first half of play, both the Hawks and the Bangles, recorded six shots in route to a scoreless first half. Junior Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY) was credited with an assist, while recording five shots in the game.

The Hawk’s freshman goalkeeper Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville, NY) made nine saves leading to her third shutout of the season. Melsert recorded five saves in the loss for Buffalo State.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team will travel to conference rival Potsdam Friday, September 23, at 4:00 pm.
