SUNY New Paltz Women’s Soccer Losses Conference Opener

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz womenýs soccer team loss their conference opener this afternoon, 2-1, to Fredonia.

With less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Fredonia (2-2-2, 1-0) freshman forward Megan Gicei (Brecksville, OH) broke into the box and threaded a shot past oncoming freshman goalkeeper Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville, NY) to put the Blue Devils on top 2-1. The Hawks remained determined to even then score, but Fredonia defense held solid to secure the victory.

SUNY New Paltz (2-1-1, 0-1) was first on the board in the opening half. Senior midfielder Amanda Picarelli (Miller Place, NY) located sophomore forward Stephanie Potts (Cortlandt Manor, NY), who launched a shot to the back of the net giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Just before halftime, the Blue Devils tied the affair on a goal from senior forward Amy Wenzel (Elma, NY). The initial shot by, sophomore midfielder Jess Weinberger (Pittsford, NY), was rejected by Boccard, but the rebound fell at Wenzelýs feet to tie the game 1-1 at half.

Freshman goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport, NY) made seven saves for Fredonia. Boccard recorded three saves in the loss for SUNY New Paltz.

The SUNY New Paltz womenýs soccer team will host conference rival Buffalo State tomorrow, Saturday, September 17, at 1:00 pm.
