SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Team Falls To Union College

SCHENECTADY, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team took the field today at the 2005 Union Classic Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Hawks however, came away with a tough loss at the hands of Union College 5-1.

The Hawks wasted no time and took an immediate 1-0 lead with a goal off the foot of junior midfielder, Jason Irish (Newburgh, NY) after only 5:12 of play. Junior defender Paolo Capparelli (Wappingers Falls, NY) assisted on the Irish tally.

Though SUNY New Paltz, (3-2) scored first, today’s game was dominated by Union College sophomore forward Chris Poey (Amherst, MA) who netted four goals for the Dutchmen. Poey was the first player in 29 years, and only the third person in Union College (2-1) history to score four goals in one game. Senior midfielder Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO) scored the other goal and added two assists for the Dutchmen, while Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT), Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA) also had assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY) stopped one shot in each period of play for the Hawks.

SUNY New Paltz will continue in action tomorrow at day two of the 2005 Union Classic Men’s Soccer Tournament with a game against RPI.
