SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Team Captures First Win of Season

NEW PALTZ, NY — With a 1:40 remaining on the clock, junior forward Joe Fabian (Selden, NY) took a shot, which deflected off Wheaton goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT) and landed at the feet of senior midfielder Jason Irish (Newburgh, NY). Irish laced a perfect shot into an open net giving SUNY New Paltz (1-0) a 1-0 lead. The Hawks maintained a strong defensive effort over the remaining time to solidify their first win of the season.

This afternoon at Alumni Field, against Wheaton College ranked 15th in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) the Hawks defense lead by junior defender Paolo Capparelli (Wappingers Falls, NY) was invincible. The contest was extremely competitive at both ends of the field. Wheaton College (0-1) out shot the Hawks in the first half of play, seven to four, however, the Hawks returned the favor in the second half tallying six shots to Lyon’s four.

In his debut, freshman goalkeeper Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY) made nine saves to record his first shutout. Pachniuk made seven saves for Wheaton College.
