SUNY New Paltz Drops Doubleheader To Brockport
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team lost a conference doubleheader to Brockport this afternoon at Loren Campbell Field.
In the opener, senior second baseman Tom Weiner (Maybrook, NY) went 2-for-4 and drove in three to lead the Golden Eagles to a 9-2 victory. With Brockport leading 4-2 in the top of the eighth, Weiner belted a two-run triple that capped off a five-run inning that put the game out of reach.
The Hawks (9-18, 3-7) pulled to within a run on two occasions. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, junior second baseman William Kelts (Waterford, NY) hit his first home run of the year to trim the Brockport lead to 2-1.
After the Golden Eagles answered with a run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1, the Hawks once again closed to within a run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA). With runners on second and third and two out sophomore designated hitter John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) lined out to second to end the inning.
Brockport (17-12, 4-6) then touched sophomore Ryan Schafer (Oceanside, NY) for a run in the seventh before breaking the game open in the eighth. Junior Joe Gugliotta (Bay Port, NY) suffered his first loss of the season. Gugliotta, who left trailing 3-1, worked five and two third innings, allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out five to drop to 4-1.
Senior Ryan Mohr (Cheektowaga, NY) evened his record at 2-2 with a complete game effort. Mohr allowed six hits, walked two, struck out three and went 2-for-5 at the plate.
In game two, senior second baseman John Morgan (Hilton, NY) drove in three and junior catcher Jeff Schwegler (Cheektowaga, NY) went 3-for-6 to help the Golden Eagles earn a 9-6 victory.
Trailing 6-5 in the seventh, Brockport scored three times in the inning off SUNY New Paltz freshman starter Jeff Stith (Selden, NY). Junior shortstop Sean Davis (Brockport, NY) had an RBI triple in the inning to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
SUNY New Paltz tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth and loaded the bases with one out before DeKams and freshman Neal Rosengren (White Plains, NY) both struck out to end it.
Freshman Dan Ferraro (Schenectady, NY) pitched the final three and a third innings to earn the win. He held the Hawks scoreless while allowing four hits, two walks and recording two strikeouts. Ferraro is now 1-1.
Stith allowed 12 hits and eight runs in six and a third innings to drop to 2-2.
Lopez went 2-for-3 with an RBI while junior designated hitter Blake Crocitto (Lake George, NY) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Junior catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) and junior right fielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) each collected two hits as well for SUNY New Paltz.
