Hawks Outlast SUNY Old Westbury in 12 Innings

NEW PALTZ, NY — Junior right fielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) singled home junior second baseman William Kelts (Waterford, NY) with one out in the bottom of the 12th to give SUNY New Paltz a 10-9 win over SUNY Old Westbury this afternoon.

Cote’s single capped off a three hour and 41 minute affair where the two teams combined 19 runs, 26 hits, 26 men left on base and 11 runs in the ninth inning alone.

Behind the pitching of sophomore John DeKams (Kings Park, NY), SUNY New Paltz carried a 5-2 lead into the ninth before SUNY Old Westbury rallied for seven runs to move in front 9-5. The Panthers (11-18) had six hits in the inning and took a 6-5 lead on an RBI single by junior Peter Reyes (Farmingdale, NY). Freshman catcher Jamie Quinn (Massapequa, NY) followed with a two-run single to put SUNY Old Westbury in front 8-5. The Panthers added one more in the inning to take a four-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The Hawks (10-20) answered with four in the bottom of the ninth and tied the game on a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run single by freshman infielder Neal Rosengren (White Plains, NY). Cote? helped set the stage for Rosengren?s game-tying hit with an RBI single that was part of a 2-for-4, two RBI performance.

DeKams went eight and two thirds inning and was in control until running into trouble in the ninth. He was not involved in the decision despite walking two and striking out nine.

Junior Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) pitched three innings of hitless relief to earn his second win of the season. Gutes was also 3-for-6 at the plate and scored three runs. Junior left fielder Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) collected three hits in five at bats and scored twice.

Reyes took the loss for the loss for the Panthers. He surrendered nine hits and five runs in four and two thirds innings. Sophomore outfielder Greg Jones (Laurelton, NY) was the hitting star for the Panthers going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
