Hawks Lose Pair to Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to conference rival Cortland this afternoon. The Red Dragons won the first, 8-1, and the second 8-3.

The Hawks managed to get only three hits in the opener. Junior Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) went 1-for-4, sophomore third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) was 1-for-3 and junior catcher Josh Gutes (Happauge, NY) was 1-for-4 with a run batted in.

Cortland (27-4, 12-0) posted four runs in the second, one in the sixth and three more in the bottom of the eighth to grab the 8-1 victory. Senior pitcher Mike Burnett (Westfield, NY) earned the win (6-2), giving up one run on two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts through five and two-thirds innings of work. Sophomore third baseman Will Groff (Queensbury, NY) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and junior centerfielder Jimmy Basnight (East Norwich, NY) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Red Dragons.

Junior pitcher Joe Gugliotta (Bay Port, NY) took the loss (4-2) for the Hawks. Gugliotta threw seven and two-thirds innings and allowed 14 hits, eight runs, two earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts.

SUNY New Paltz (9-20, 3-9) tied up the second game in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman William Kelts (Waterford, NY). However, the Red Dragons brought six runs home in the bottom of the inning to put SUNY New Paltz away for good.

Sophomore Travis Robinson (Ilion, NY) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, and senior second baseman Steve Newman (Henrietta, NY) went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore pitcher Jon Rockfeld (Islip Terrace, NY) picked up the win (3-1).

McAdams went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, sophomore pitcher Ryan Schafer (Oceanside, NY) pitched four plus innings of scoreless ball in relief. Schafer gave up three hits, walked three and struck out four. Junior pitcher Trevor Bailey (West Hurley, NY) took the loss (0-4).
