Hawks Defeat #25 RPI

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team made it three in a row with a 7-5 win over 25th ranked RPI this afternoon at Loren Campbell Field.

With the score tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, junior first baseman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) led the inning off with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior outfielder Trevor Bailey (W. Hurley, NY). Glanzman then took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by RPI junior third baseman Joe Ihnatolya (Clifton Park, NY). SUNY New Paltz (6-9) added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth on a run scoring double by sophomore left fielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) to give the Hawks a two-run lead.

Junior left-hander Joe Gugliotta (Miller Place, NY) pitched an inning and two thirds out of the bullpen to earn the victory and improve to 3-0. Junior Josh Gutes (Hauppague, NY) worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, RPI (9-6) scored twice in the inning off sophomore Ryan Schafer (Oceanside, NY) to pull even. Senior right fielder Ryan Meron (Plattsburgh, NY), who went 3-for-5 on the day, provided the game-tying hit and chased Schafer from the game. Schafer, making his second start of the year for the Hawks, did not figure in the decision. He pitched six and a third innings and gave up all five runs. He walked three and struck out two.

Freshman Eric Redding (Kerhonkson, NY) started for RPI. He went three and a third innings, allowed four hits, four runs, walked three and did not strike out a batter. Sophomore Ian Titcomb (Norwood, MA) took the loss. He pitched two and a third innings and surrendered the go-ahead run in the Hawks half of the seventh.

Bailey and junior designated hitter William Kelts (Waterford, NY) each had two hits for SUNY New Paltz. Senior outfielder BG Porter (Rockaway, NJ) went 2-for-5 for RPI while senior first baseman Dan Quinn (Albany,NY) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
