SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Team Sweeps Tri-Match at Elting

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team hosted a full day of volleyball at Elting Gymnasium today. The Hawks opened up with a 3-1 win over Nazareth. The Golden Flyers took the first game 31-29, but the Hawks rallied to win the next three games 30-23, 30-21 and 30-17. The Hawks had four players with at least ten kills. Senior outside hitter Chris Ganje (Halfmoon, NY) and junior middle blocker Greg Jackson (Central Square, NY) led the way with 12 kills. Sophomore opposite Joshua Spiro and senior outside hitter Mike LaRocco (Hauppauge, NY) finished with ten kills a piece to lead SUNY New Paltz to the victory.

Freshman outside hitter Andre Zguta (Spencerport, NY) led the Golden Flyers win 19 kills, two service aces and two blocks.

SUNY New Paltz went on to sweep Emmanuel College 30-22, 30-15, and 33-11 for the 3-0 win. In the third match the Hawks rallied behind sophomore outside hitter Jeff Lee (Clifton Park, NY) who led the team with eight kills. Jackson finished with six blocks and six kills in the match.

Senior middle blockers Michael Mazur (Chicago, IL) and Warren Bowman (Providence, RI) joined freshman Jose Olivera (San Juan, Puerto Rico) to give the Saints five kills apiece in the losing effort.

In the final match of the afternoon the Hawks served up their second straight sweep defeating Lehman College 3-0. SUNY New Paltz had to battle from behind to win the first two games 30-24, and 30-28 respectively. The Hawks took the third game 30-24 to seal the win. Junior opposite Chris Grunwald (St. James, NY) led the Hawks with seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Spiro added six kills, four service aces and 11 blocks to help SUNY New Paltz to victory.

Senior setter Jacsier Lantigua (Bronx, NY) recorded five kills, 12 assists, and ten digs for the Lightning in defeat.
