Hawks Sweep Trinity in Season Opener

WASHINGTON DC — The SUNY New Paltz softball team ushered in the 2005 season with a doubleheader sweep over Trinity University in Washington DC this afternoon.

The Hawks scored 21 runs in the two games and received strong pitching from freshmen Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY) and Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY).

Reinke surrendered two hits in the Hawks 9-1 opening game victory. SUNY New Paltz pushed home four in the first and two in the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead after two innings. Freshman Amalia Ditripani (Staten Island, NY) was 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut and sophomore Amy O’Brien (LaGrangeville, NY) walked three times and scored three runs.

In game two, SUNY New Paltz again led 6-1 after two innings and cruised to a 12-2 win. Freshman Joelle Von Bischoffshausen (North Brunswick, NJ) went 3-for-4, homered twice and scored three times. Ditripani was 3-for-3 at the plate and senior Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) went 2-for-3.

O’Hea scattered four hits and struck out two in her collegiate debut.
