SUNY New Paltz Comeback Falls Short at Oneonta

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball overcome a 17-point second half deficit and took a one- point lead with 3:41 to play, but ultimately fell 76-72 to Oneonta this afternoon.

The Red Dragons (9-11, 5-6) took a 53-36 lead with 13:37 to play before the Hawks went on a 25-7 run over the next 10 minutes to grab a 61-60 lead. Sophomore forward John Hauser (East Williston, NY) gave the Hawks (7-12, 3-8) the lead, their first since the 9:15 mark of the first half, when drove to the basket and scored.

Oneonta regained the lead on its next possession, when Kevin Reed grabbed a rebound and scored with 3:03 to play. The Red Dragons took a three-point lead with 2:44 to play before junior guard Maurice Douglas (Brooklyn, NY) drove to the basket and converted a three-point play to tie the game at 64.

Sean Coffey then hit a pair of free throws to put the Red Dragons ahead, 66-64 with 2:30 remaining and Oneonta never relinquished its lead from there.

The Hawks placed four players in double figures led by Hauser’s 22 points. Sophomore forward Amseshem Foluke-Henderson (Jamaica, NY) added 15 points and eight rebounds. Douglas finished with 12 points and sophomore guard Matt Irwin (Brooklyn, NY) scored 10 points.

Anthony Negreanu led the Red Dragons with 22 points and was 5-of-7 from three-point range. As team, Oneonta was 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
