SUNY New Paltz Women’s Swimming Team Finishes 2nd Perfect Year
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team finished the 2004-2005 swim season undefeated, a repeat performance of the 2003-2004 season. The Hawks defeated Cortland this afternoon 109.5 – 93.5. The SUNY New Paltz men fell short against the Red Dragons by a score of 107 – 92.
The SUNY New Paltz women (7-0) continued their dominance in the pool this season and finished today’s meet with eight first place finishes. Sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:14.41), the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.99) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:23.48). Junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) swam to a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.89) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.45). In her final swim home meet, senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) grabbed two first-place finishes to help the Hawks to victory. Her first came in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.41) and the second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.77). Fellow senior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) also took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.16.
The Cortland women’s swimming team (5-2) came away with victories in both relay events. Freshman Erica Clark (Sloatsburg, NY), junior Abby Murphy (Montour Falls, NY), senior Nicole Damiano (Middletown, NY) and sophomore Nicole LaBarge (Morrisonville, NY) finished first in the 400-yard medley relay (4:12.75), LaBarge and Damiano would later join sophomore Allie Houseman (Wellsville, NY), sophomore Krista Lennox (Buffalo, NY) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:46.24).
The SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming team (3-4) enjoyed a strong afternoon from one of their seniors. In his final home meet, senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) finished first in the 100-yard freestyle and joined freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY), and fellow senior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) for a first place swim in the 400-yard medley relay (3:44.77).
Sophomore Danny Lo (Toms River, NY) finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.60). The men also grabbed first in the second relay of the meet. With a time of 3:33.33, junior Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA), freshman John Fleckenstein (Prot Jefferson, NY), sophomore Connor Reynolds (Thiells, NY) and Chaplin finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Cortland men’s swim team (5-2) were led by sophomore Andy Cheavlier (Chazy, NY) who finished first in three events, the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.61), the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.95).
