OT Win Raises Hawks Winning Streak to Five

NEW PALTZ, NY — Playing its second overtime game in five days, the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team outscored Plattsburgh 14-5 in the extra session to extend its winning streak to five with a 61-52 win this afternoon.

SUNY New Paltz, who never trailed in the overtime period, took the lead for good on its first possession when freshman guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) hit a jumper. The Hawks (8-4, 4-1) quickly extended their lead to four on a basket by sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) who scored 17 of her 19 points in the final 25 minutes of the game. After Plattsburgh pulled to within two with 2:09 to play, the Hawks received a three-pointer from sophomore forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) on the ensuing possession to move ahead 54-49. Glazewski then scored a transition basket on the Hawks next trip to take a 56-49 lead with 1:40 to play.

Plattsburgh (4-8, 0-5), who trailed by 11 with 14 minutes to play, chipped away at the Hawks lead and cut it to 39-37 with seven minutes remaining on a three-pointer by freshman guard Ashley Gela (Johnsonville, NY). Plattsburgh stayed within striking distance the rest of the way took its only second half lead on a jumper by sophomore guard Lynette Cray (Buffalo, NY) with 3:50 to play to put the Cardinals in front 43-42. Kelty then answered with a three-pointer at the 2:55 mark to give SUNY New Paltz a 45-43 edge.

Trailing 47-45, with under a minute to play, Plattsburgh tied the game on a basket by senior guard Athena DiLorenzo (Schenectady, NY) with 47 seconds to play.

Phillips finished with 19 points for Plattsburgh and Cray added seven off the bench. Glazewski and freshman guard Sarah Salvo (Manorville, NY) each had nine points. Sohns finished with eight points and along with Salvo led the Hawks bench that combined for 24 of their 61 points.
