Hawks Edged By Geneseo, 51-47

NEW PALTZ, NY — SUNY New Paltz sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) sank a three-pointer with 3:26 to tie the score at 47, but Geneseo scored the final four points of the game and came away with a 51-47 win over the Hawks this evening.

In a second half that featured four ties and seven lead changes, Geneseo took the lead for good when junior forward Jessica Chambers (Onieda, NY) sank one of two free throws with three minutes remaining to make it 48-47. Freshman guard Lydia Reed (Webster, NY) then hit her only field goal of the game to extend the Blue Knights’ lead to 50-47 with 2:10 to play.

SUNY New Paltz led by as many as four on two occasions in the second half. Senior forward Tarah Norris (Port Jervis, NY) hit a pair of free throws with 7:37 to play to put the Hawks in front 44-40. The Blue Knights reclaimed the lead, 47-44, three minutes later on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Katy Irving (Olean, NY). Irving led all scorers with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range.

The two teams combined for just 15, second half field goals. Geneseo was 8-of-25 from the field while SUNY New Paltz was 7-of-26 in the second half.

Geneseo (6-10, 4-4) led by as many as eight in the first half before SUNY New Paltz used an 11-3 run to pull even at 19. The Blue Knights responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 26-19 lead with 2:35 to play in the half and carried a 28-23 advantage into the break.

Sophomore forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) led the Hawks with 11 points. Kelty finished with nine for the Hawks who dropped their third consecutive conference game and are now 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the SUNYAC.
