Hawks Defeat Potsdam To Make it Four Straight

NEW PALTZ — Sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) scored 16 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to lead SUNY New Paltz to a 79-42 win over conference rival Potsdam this evening at Elting Gym.

The Hawks improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC with the victory. SUNY New Paltz also extended its winning streak to four straight; its longest since the 1992-93 season.

After a slow start, the Hawks took the lead for good with 13:06 left in the first half when Kelty drove to the basket and scored to put the Hawks ahead 8-7. From there, SUNY New Paltz used a 13-4 run which was capped by a Kelty three-pointer at the nine-minute mark to make it 21-11. Freshman guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) came off the bench later in the half and sank a three-pointer to extend the Hawks’ advantage to 40-18. In a first half where SUNY New Paltz shot .531 from the field (17-of-32), the Hawks held a 42-22 lead at the break.

Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) also finished in double figures with 10 points. Eleven different players scored in the game for SUNY New Paltz.

Potsdam (1-11, 0-4) was led by junior forward Darcell Lucas (Schenectady, NY) who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

SUNY New Paltz will host conference rival Plattsburgh tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. while Potsdam will play at Oneonta at 2:00 p.m. as well.
