Schoonmaker Earns Second Player of the Week Honor
NEW PALTZ, NY — For the second time this month, SUNY New Paltz junior midfielder Kate Schoonmaker (High Falls, NY — Rondout Valley HS) has been named field hockey Player of the Week in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
Schoonmaker had seven points in a historic week for the Hawks. SUNY New Paltz went 2-1 and in the process established a program record for wins in a single-season. The Hawks, who are now 7-10 in their fifth season of varsity play, surpassed the previous mark of five wins set by the 2003 squad.
Schoonmaker scored a goal in all three of the Hawks’ contests last week. She had the game-winner five minutes into the first overtime period to give SUNY New Paltz a 2-1 win over Elmira on Sunday. The previous day she scored a goal and assisted on another in a 6-0 victory over Wells. Schoonmaker began the week with a goal in a 3-2 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Oct. 20.
Schoonmaker was also named the SUNYAC Player of the Week on Oct. 11 after scoring three goals in wins over Ramapo and Oswego. She has 25 points (11 goals, 3 assists) this fall and is tied with Patricia Erikson for the top-scoring spot on the team.
