NEW PALTZ, NY — This weekend the SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team will travel to Cortland, NY for the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament.
The Hawks, who are 25-8 and seeded-seventh among the 12-team field, will play 10th-seeded Brockport (19-9) on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 12:00 p.m. The winner of the SUNY New Paltz-Brockport match will advance to the quarterfinals to face second- seeded Cortland later that evening. With a 31-1 record, the Red Dragons have earned an opening round bye.
Defending champion New York University is the top-seeded team. The Violets, 31-3 and ranked seventh in Division III, have an opening round bye and will meet either ninth-seeded Nazareth or eighth-seeded Geneseo in the quarterfinals.
The Hawks are one of six SUNYAC teams to earn an invitation into the tournament. SUNY New Paltz earned the second-highest seed among its SUNYAC rivals and is ahead of Geneseo (8th), Brockport (10th), Fredonia (11th) and Oneonta (12th).
Under third-year head coach Matt Giufre, the SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team will compete in the NYSWCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. This year’s squad is the first to reach the 20-win plateau since the ’99 squad went 27-15. In addition, SUNY New Paltz went 7-3 in its conference schedule and finished third in the SUNYAC Eastern Division standings. It’s the best finish in league play for the Hawks since the 8-2 record by the ’99 team.
SUNY New Paltz will wrap-up its regular season at home against Union College on Wednesday (Oct. 27) at 7:00 p.m.
