SUNY New Paltz Women’s Tennis Blanks Hartwick in Opener

ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team began the 2004 season in full swing with a big win, 9-0, over Hartwick College this afternoon.

In number one singles, freshman Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) began her rookie campaign with a win 6-0, 6-1 over sophomore Mara Tichy (Bayport, NY). Senior Kerry Farrell (Rockville Center, NY) followed suit in number two singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Amanda Gerich (Johnson City, NY). In the number three singles match, freshman Alexandra Goldberg (Scarsdale, NY) shutout junior Kathleen Morgese (East Syracuse, NY) in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Junior Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY) was faced with the toughest challenge of the afternoon in the number four singles match, but walked away with the win, 6-4, 4-6,10-8 over junior Julie Scarano (Little Falls, NY). At number five singles sophomore Jennifer Larson (Port Jervis, NY) came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win over junior Elizabeth Green (Endwell. NY). Finishing up the singles, senior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over sophomore Katie Petrosa (Chittenango, NY) at number six.

The Hawks took all double matches as well. In the first flight, Yamakawa and Farrell defeated Gerich and Tichy 8-5. Goldberg and Larson defeated Scarano and Petrosa 8-1 in number two doubles. Lastly, in number three doubles Goldstein and junior Laura Thomas (Hyde Park, NY) defeated Green and senior Laura Nestor (Lakewood, CO) 8-5.
