Solid Start, SUNY New Paltz Handles Manhattanville

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team started out on the right foot this afternoon with a 3-1 win over Manhattanville College in the season opener for both teams.

The Hawks put forth a strong defensive effort and held the Valiants to two shots for the game.

Sophomore forward Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY), who led the team in scoring last season, picked up where she left off in her rookie campaign with the game’s first goal thirty minutes the first half.

Sophomore forward Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) and freshman midfielder Bettina Hamm (Johnsville, NY) each added second half goals to help the Hawks avenge a 3-1 loss to the Valiants last season

Manhattanville’s lone goal was scored by senior midfielder Beth Hickey (Dobbs Ferry, NY) at the seventy-nine minute mark.

This weekend the SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team will take part in the Marywood Tournament. The Hawks will take on Rutgers-Camden in the opening round on Saturday at 3 p.m.
