Hawks Surrender Late Goal To Kings Point, Fall 1-0

KINGS POINT, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team opened the 2004 season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy this evening.

The two teams played scoreless soccer for 69 minutes before freshman Brian Yetman netted the only goal of the game. Yetman took a pass from senior Glen Peer to give the Mariners the lead and the eventual victory.

In the first half, the Hawks offense produced several scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them. Senior midfielder Chris Daly (Washingtonville, NY) made a bid to put the Hawks ahead in the 18th-minute but senior goalie James Papazis made a diving save to negate the goal. Daly and sophomore forward Greg Foss (Queensbury, NY) also came up short on scoring opportunities later in the half that would have put the SUNY New Paltz on the scoreboard.

Kings Point controlled the second half and held a 9-3 shot advantage.

SUNY New Paltz sophomore goalie Jake Lammers (Highland, NY) made three saves in his first collegiate start. Papazis made two stops for the Mariners (1-0).

The Hawks (0-1) will play The College of New Jersey at Drew University in the Drew Fall Classic on Saturday (Sept. 4) at 3:00 p.m.
