Wachter’s Two-Out Double Lifts Hawks Past Scranton

FORT PIERCE, FL — Sophomore designated hitter Sean Wachter (Miller Place, NY) hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth to give SUNY New Paltz a 6-4 win over the University of Scranton this afternoon.

The victory was the third in a row for SUNY New Paltz who improved to 3-9. The Hawks scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by freshman third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY). Junior catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) added an RBI single in a three-run third to extend the Hawks lead to 4-0.

Scranton scored four in the bottom of the fifth off SUNY New Paltz starter Andrew Raphael (Brooklyn, NY) to even the score at four. After allowing two hits through the first four innings, Raphael hit a batter, threw two wild pitches and gave up five hits in the fifth. Senior center fielder Brian Grady (Clarks Summit, PA) tripled home a run to cut the Hawks’ lead to 4-3 and junior designated hitter Dennis Johnson (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) followed with an RBI single to even the score at four.

Raphael pitched five innings to earn his first win of the season. The lefthander gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Freshman Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) pitched two innings of one-hit ball to earn his first collegiate save.

Junior Steve Urbanovich (Nutley, NJ) took the loss for the Royals. In six innings of work, he allowed six runs, gave up 10 hits, walked three and struck out five.

DeKams was one of three Hawks to collect two hits in the game. He was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Gutes went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and sophomore centerfielder Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
