SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Finish Fourth at Conference Championship

BUFFALO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams each finished fourth at the 2004 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championship this weekend in Buffalo, New York.

On the final day of the competition, sophomore Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) won the conference championship in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.41. Masterson’s first place effort followed a SUNYAC championship by junior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) who won the 100 backstroke for the men’s squad the previous day. Yeung’s time of 53:19 was a National B Cut qualifying time.

Among the highlights from the third and final day, junior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a National B Cut qualifying time of 2:27.83. Junior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) finished third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.67.

A day earlier, Grempel set a New Paltz record in the 100 breaststroke by finishing second with a time of 1:08.88. In addition, Grempel teamed with Lindner, Masterson, and freshman Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) to finish third in the 200- medley relay with a National B Cut qualifying time of 1:51.80.

For the men, senior Jon Sousa (Albany, NY) finished second in the 200 butterfly with a New Paltz record time of 1:57.71. On Friday, Sousa also established a school record in the 100 butterfly with a second place effort and a time of 52.37. Yeung was fourth in the 100 freestyle (48.14) and freshman Danny Lo (Toms River, NY) was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.29).
