Weigel Nets 16 Points in Loss to SUNY Cortland
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team suffered its third straight conference defeat falling 71-40 to SUNY Cortland this evening at Elting Gymnasium.
The Red Dragons, who began the evening in the third place in the SUNYAC standings, raced out to an early 8-0 lead and led by as many as 26 late in the first half. Sophomore guard Dani Maye (Kirkwood, NY) keyed the first half attack scoring 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first 20 minutes. New Paltz struggled on the offensive end hitting just 5-of-22 from the floor while Cortland built a 37-14 advantage at the break.
Junior guard Deirdre Zimmerman (Almond, NY) came off the bench to register 11 points for the Red Dragons who have now won five of their last six contests and are 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC.
Junior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) turned in a strong effort for the Hawks and finished with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. She also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore forward Tania Liberato (Brentwood, NY) had four points and a team high eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
New Paltz (5-10, 2-6) will travel to Geneseo on Friday evening for a conference game against the Blue Knights at 6 p.m.
