Strong Second Half Leads Oswego Past New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY — Junior guard Sally Shuster (East Amherst, NY) came off the bench and sank eight three-point field goals to help lead the Oswego State women’s basketball team to a 73-43 win over SUNY New Paltz this evening at Elting Gym.

Shuster, who finished with a game-high 24 points, helped the Lakers overcome a 33-30 halftime deficit to improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. A strong defensive effort by Oswego State limited SUNY New Paltz to 2-of-22 shooting in the second half. The Lakers kept New Paltz off the scoreboard for nearly 10 minutes in the second half and forced 19 Hawk turnovers.

Trailing 28-20 with 6:35 remaining in the first half, New Paltz used 13-2 run the rest of the way to take a 33-30 lead at the break. Junior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) and junior forward Tarah Norris (Port Jervis, NY) combined for nine of the Hawks’ 13 points and a three-pointer by freshman guard Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY) with 50 seconds remaining carried New Paltz to a three-point lead at the break.

Freshman guard Kelly Mraz (Johnstown, NY) scored seven consecutive points to give the Lakers a 42-39 lead with 11:31 remaining. Shuster then made three straight three-point field goals to extend the margin to 51-39 with nine minutes to play.

Junior guard Amanda McLaughlin (Groton, NY) added 12 points for Oswego while Mraz finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

Norris led the Hawks (5-8, 2-4) with nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) added eight points for New Paltz.
