SUNY New Paltz Women’s Soccer Team Drops League Opener to Plattsburgh
NEW PALTZ, NY — Coming off a win on Wednesday night, the SUNY New Paltz women s soccer team fell to conference rival Plattsburgh State this afternoon, 4-1.
Sophomore defender Emily Hodgdon (Colchester, VT) scored on a penalty kick to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Maria Coloccia (Clifton Park,NY) a sophomore forward, extended the lead to 2-0 when she scored in front of the net on a corner kick from junior forward Kaleen McCool (Plattsburgh, NY).
Leading 2-0 midway through the second half, Hodgdon scored again for Plattsburgh (6-1,1-0) off of a free kick from 20 yards away to increase their lead to 3-0. The Hawks broke up the Cardinals bid for their fourth shutout of the season when freshman midfielder Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY) scored her team leading third goal to put New Paltz on the board.
Plattsburgh out shot the Hawks 27-5 and junior goalkeeper Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) had 12 saves for New Paltz. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
