Cross Country Teams Compete at NYU Invitational

BRONX, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men s and women s cross country teams competed at the New York University Invitational this morning at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The men s team finished 23rd among 32 scoring teams while the women placed15th overall out of 23 teams.

Competing in an 8K-event, senior John Zarella (Mahopac, NY) led the way for New Paltz with a 68th place finish and a time of 28:26. Senior Dan Holton (Rhinebeck, NY) was 139th with a time of 29:40. Freshman Matt McLean (Oswego, NY) finished third for New Paltz and 161st overall with a time of 30:01. Junior Jason Letts (Plattsburgh, NY) was 204th with a time of 31:03 while freshman Harry Sudwischer (Copiague, NY) came in 213th place with a time of 31:19.

The New Paltz men s cross country team combined for 608 points. Lock Haven, led by first place finisher Chris Cowan (26:09), won the meet with 43 points.

Sophomore Janet Walsh (Baldwinsville,NY) completed the 5K women s event in 21:16 to finish 58th. Sophomore Kate Choromanski (Shelton, CT) came in 66th place with a time of 21:25. Freshman Alida Van Alemelo (Groton, NY) was third for New Paltz and 115th overall with a time of 22:25. Freshman Kelly Dunphy (Hauppauge, NY) completed the course in 22:33 to finish in 123rd place. Sophomore Heather DeBuono (Fishkill, NY) was right behind her in 124th place with a time of 22:36.

The New Paltz women s cross country team accumulated 419 points. Wesleyan and The College of New Jersey tied for the meet championship with 60 points. Callie Bradley of Dickinson College won the meet with a time of 18:52.
