New Paltz Women’s Soccer Team Falls to SUNY Potsdam in Close Game

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women s soccer team tried to rally from a 3-1 deficit, but fell 4-3 to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Potsdam this afternoon.

Danielle Wheeler (Burke, NY), a freshman midfielder for the Bears, came off the bench and scored the first goal of the game to give Potsdam an early 1-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later Potsdam (3-5, 1-1) added two more goals when senior forward Erin Blandin (Ilion, NY) scored on a free kick and junior forward Jodi Ziemba (Russel, NY) scored on an assist by Blandin. Ziemba s second goal of the game came late in the second half to give Potsdam a 4-2 lead.

The Hawks retaliated two minutes later when freshman midfielder Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY) scored her fourth goal of the season to put New Paltz (1-4-1, 0-2) on the board.

Trailing 3-1 at the half, New Paltz came alive when junior forward Laura Thomas (Bay Shore, NY) scored two goals, one on an assist by Meredith Ventimiglia (Patchogue, NY) and another off of Lauren Martone s (Hudson-on-Hastings, NY) corner kick.

Despite outshooting the Bears 27-9, the Hawks couldn t find the net for the equalizer.
