Women’s Tennis Team Tied for First at RPI Invitational
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks are one of three teams tied for first place, along with Nazareth and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, after the first day of the Rensselaer Invitational Women s Tennis Tournament hosted by RPI.
New Paltz, the defending champions, garnered two points by winning two of the six single flights. Junior Amie Larson (Port Jervis, NY) captured the # 4 singles flight with a 4-0 mark and her younger sister, freshman Jennifer Larson (Port Jervis, NY), won the # 5 singles flight with an identical 4-0 record.
The Hawks made a run at winning the tournament after the first day because they had a player make the final in each of the other four flights. Junior co-captain Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY) advanced to the # 1 singles final, senior co-captain Becky Sparacin (Goshen, NY) made the finals at # 2 singles, junior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) played in the finals at the # 3 flight, and junior Jessica Smith (Newport News, VA) was a participant in the finals at # 6 singles.
The two-day tournament concludes Sunday morning beginning at 9:30 am with the three flights of doubles action taking place.
