FT. PIERCE, FL – — The New Paltz baseball team stopped a three-game losing streak with a pair of victories this morning.
Despite committing five errors, the Hawks used a six-run fifth to come away with a 13-5 win over Bethany College in game one. Senior outfielder Kevin Smith (Niskayuna, NY) went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead an 11-hit attack. Sophomore third baseman Phil Scaglione (Stony Point, NY) had a 2-for-3 day at the plate and was one three Hawks to drive in two runs.
Senior Keith Roloson (Westtown, NY) went four innings in his first start of the season and picked up the win. Roloson gave up four runs, walked three, and struckout three. Junior Jesus Estaba (Brooklyn, NY) pitched three innings of one-hit ball to earn the save.
Led by the pitching of Marc Bernstein (Commack, NY) and a 2-for-4, 2 RBI performance from senior outfielder Tom Bigler (Brewster, NY), New Paltz stopped Alvernia’s five-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory. Bernstein pitched seven strong innings and allowed just two hits while striking out seven. The freshman righthander is now 2-1 this season.
“I’m pleased that we finally played the way we’re capable of,” said New Paltz head coach Mike Juhl. “The offense did a great job in both games and came up with the clutch hit when we needed it.”
New Paltz will close out its Florida trip with an 8:00 p.m. contest against Utica College this evening.
