Lecture addresses War, Civil Rights and Law
NEW PALTZ — Attorney Mara Verheyden-Hillard, co-founder of the Partnership for Civil Justice, brings her expertise to SUNY New Paltz with a lecture on “War, Civil Rights and the Law.” At 8 p.m., March 31, in the auditorium of the Coykendall Science Building,Verheyden-Hillard will discuss recent executive orders, congressional acts and resolutions leading to international war and domestic erosion of civil rights.
“The talk is intended to bring to light who really makes the laws, who has to obey them and what the public can do,” said Gowri Parameswaran, associate professor of Educational Studies.
The lecture covers whether recent executive orders, congressional acts and resolutions “adhere to the U.S. Constitution, the UN Charter as well as commonly accepted principles of international law and human justice,” Parameswaran explains.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the SUNY New Paltz 9/11 Response Planning Committee, Honors Program, Sociology Department, School of Education, Center for Peace and Social Justice and the Women’s Studies Program.
