NEW PALTZ — The public is invited to hear noted children’s authors, Dave Ross and Charles R. Smith, Jr., speak at Sojourner Truth Library (STL) on the SUNY New Paltz campus during National Library Week 2003.
Ross will present “How a Book is Born” from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8. Smith will talk on “Developing Story Ideas with Poetry and Photography” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Both presentations will take place in the STL Main Reading Room. After a 45-minute lecture covering the creative process of story development and a behind-the-scenes view of the publishing world, each author will conduct a 45-minute hands-on workshop where participants will learn how to turn ideas into stories using prose and poetry and how to develop effective illustrations with drawings or photography. Interpretation for the hearing impaired will be provided.
Dave Ross is an author, illustrator and humorist whose line drawings appeal to children through primary grades. Charles R. Smith, Jr. is an author, poet and photographer from Poughkeepsie. The work of this African-American author is noted for its vivid photography and is appropriate for very young children through pre-teens.
Both visits are co-sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Teachers Center and supported by funding from the SUNY New Paltz Foundation and the Office of Academic Affairs.
