Third-Ranked Juniata Defeats Seventh-Ranked Hawks
NEW PALTZ, NY – — Third-ranked Juniata kept the SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team winless with a 3-0 sweep of the Hawks this evening at Elting Gym.
Juniata, who was coming off a 3-2 win over top-ranked Springfield last night, started the match slow but pulled out a 30-23 in the first game.
The Eagles (2-1) hit .391 as a team in the second game and came away with a 30-17 win.
In the third game, Juniata shook off a 23-22 Hawks’ lead to win 30-28.
Junior outside hitter Ryan Genova (Reading, PA) had 11 kills, five digs and hit .533 for the Eagles. Senior setter Scott Kofmehl (Pittsburgh, PA) recorded six kills, 20 assists and hit .750 for the match.
New Paltz (0-3) was led by sophomore middle hitter Stephen Bristow (Richmond, VA) who had nine kills, three blocks, two digs and a .350 hitting percentage.
The Hawks, who are tied with Roger Williams for seventh in this week’s AVCA Division III poll, were plagued by poor serving throughout the night and finished the match with 16 service errors.
New Paltz will host Lees-McRae and LIU Southampton next Saturday (Feb. 1) at 1:00 p.m.
