NEW PALTZ — The first of four concerts given this season at SUNY New Paltz by members of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic focuses on music by French composers performed by violinist Emily Faxon and pianist Ruthanne Schempf. Their poetic but adventuresome repertoire will be offered on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at 8 p.m. in the school’s Julien J. Studley Theatre.
The program includes Sonate III in D major by Jean Marie Leclair; Sonate by Claude Achille Debussy, and Sonate in A major by César Franck.
Both musicians are professors at SUNY. Faxon holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School and is assistant concertmaster with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. She is also a long-time member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet, the Poné Ensemble for New Music, and the Bach Festival in North Conway, New Hampshire. She has been awarded three full fellowships to the Tanglewood Music Center. She has played for the Long Island Philharmonic, the American Symphony, Clarion Concerts, Pro Arte, and has recorded for MCI, Albany, and Soundspell Records.
Pianist Ruthanne Schempf holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in piano from the Manhattan School of Music and since 1984, Dr. Schempf has been the pianist for the West Point Glee Club, with whom she tours extensively. She teaches music history, theory, and piano.
