Buffalo State Rallies to Defeat Women’s Basketball Team
NEW PALTZ – — The Buffalo State women’s basketball team overcame a 27-19 halftime deficit to defeat SUNY New Paltz 55-43 this afternoon in Elting Gym.
The Bengals (4-2, 2-0) took the lead for good with 8:10 remaining in the game on a jumper by senior forward Abby Kochan (Newport, NY). Kochan gave Buffalo State a 37-35 lead on the first of her six straight points her play eventually put the Bengals ahead 41-37 at the 6:08 mark. Freshman forward Desiree Gibson (Rochester, NY) also keyed the second half rally for Buffalo State scoring the final nine points for her team. She finished with a game-high 19 points and added 11 rebounds and six steals.
Led by the play of junior forward Lindsay Dakin (Andover, CT) and sophomore guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) New Paltz broke open a 14-14 tie with 5:56 remaining in the first half and turned it into an eight-point halftime margin. Dakin had five points during the Hawks 13-5 run including a three-point field goal at the 3:11 mark that put New Paltz ahead by four. Weigel then scored in transition and hit two free throws on the Hawks next possession to extend the lead to 27-17.
Weigel was the only Hawk in double figures and finished with 16 points. Senior forward Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) collected 15 rebounds for New Paltz who is now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.
