Schwartz Leads Hawks Past Buffalo State
NEW PALTZ — Freshman midfielder Matty Schwartz (Weston, CT) had a goal and an assist to help lead the SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team to a 3-1 conference win over Buffalo State this afternoon.
Schwartz gave the Hawks (5-8, 2-3) a late 1-0 first half lead when her corner kick sailed through the hands of Buffalo State freshman goalie Nastassja Dasque (Brooklyn,NY) and into the net.
SUNY New Paltz mainted control of the game throughout much of the second half and increased their lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute when another corner kick by Schwartz was played in front of the net by sophomore defender Kayla Sutton (Chicago, IL) and knocked into the goal.
Buffalo State made a bid to climb back in the game in the 83rd minute when freshman forward Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls, NYU) fired a shot from 15 yards out that went through the hands of Hawks sophomore goalie Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) to narrow the Bengals deficit to 2-1.
With Buffalo State (3-7, 1-3) looking for the tie the Hawks capitalized on a breakaway when freshman forward Winnie Lento (Patchogue, NY) set up sophomore forward Lauren Martone (Hastings, NY) for her team-leading sixth goal of the season to put the game out of reach.
