Hawks Win Final Home Game Of 2002
NEW PALTZ – — The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team scored two first half goals to defeat visiting Mount St. Mary 2-1 this afternoon.
The Hawks (7-11) scored both of their goals in a span of two minutes and 19 seconds. The first came when senior midfielder Maria Puccio (Malverne, NY) floated a shot from 20-yards out that went over the head of Mount St. Mary sophomore goalie Rachele Kempton (Manorville, NY) giving New Paltz a 1-0 edge.
The Hawks, who outshot the Blue Knights 10-1 in the first half and 17-4 for the game, quickly increased their lead to 2-0 when freshman midfielder Matty Schwartz (Weston, CT) set up freshman forward Winnie Lento (Patchogue, NY) for the second New Paltz goal.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, Mount St. Mary (7-8) broke into the scoring column when junior forward Andrea Palumbo (Waterbury, CT) scored her seventh goal of the season to draw the Blue Knights within one.
This afternoon’s game marked the final home contest for seniors Puccio, Geri Streigold (Valley Stream, NY) and Nicole Corvaia (Centereach, NY). The Hawks went 5-6 at home this season.
