Field Hockey Beats Brockport

NEW PALTZ — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over conference rival Brockport this afternoon at Dietz Stadium.

The Hawks scored two first-half goals to claim just their second conference victory in the three-year history of the program.

SUNY New Paltz (2-4, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the game when senior Meredith Herfel (Holbrook, NY) fired a shot past Brockport sophomore goalie Sara Sutherland (Fort Ann, NY). The Hawks added another score late in the first half on an unassisted goal by freshman attacker Patricia Erikson (Massapequa Park, NY).

SUNY New Paltz freshman goalie Erica Engstrom (Montauk, NY) made three key saves in the second half to preserve the win and he first collegiate shutout.

Brockport fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.
