Daum Scores Game-Winner Over Rhode Island

NEW PALTZ — Forward Matt Daum (New Paltz, NY) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:36 remaining, to lift New Paltz to a 3-2 win over Rhode Island College in the opening round of the Mid-Hudson Classic.

Daum beat Rhode Island goalkeeper Jason Nelson on a shot from fifteen yards out to give the Hawks their first win of the season. New Paltz is now 1-2 while Rhode Island dropped its season opener.

The Anchormen built a 2-1 lead midway through the first half. Forward Kyle Teixeira scored on a penalty kick and then set up a goal by German Cardona to put Rhode Island ahead at 26:10 of the first half.

SUNY New Paltz battled back to tie the game in the 84th minute when Tim Van Wyen scored from 20 yards out and setting the stage for Daum’s game-winner.

Daum had given New Paltz a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the game when he scored off a pass from Washingtonville’s Bryan Smith.

The Mid-Hudson Classic continues for both teams tomorrow at Vassar. King’s College will play New Paltz at 1:00 p.m. and Vassar will entertain Rhode Island College at 3:00 p.m.
