W. Conn. Downs Women’s Softball

NEW PALTZ — The nationally ranked Western Connecticut Colonials took two games from the women’s softball team Wednesday 5-0 and 12-3. The losses drop the Hawks’ record to 1-35 on the year.

In game one, freshman Brooke Morris mowed down the Hawks pitching a complete-game no-hitter while striking out seven batters. Kirstene Craig (Stone Ridge, NY) was on the mound for New Paltz scattering eight hits in the game.

In game two, trailing 7-0, the Hawk bats finally came alive in the fourth inning as New Paltz rapped out two doubles and two singles for three runs. Val Blackman (Castle Creek, NY) began the inning with a double followed by Katie Monahan’s (Port Jefferson Station, NY) RBI-single. Tiffany Danko (Goshen, NY) then doubled in Monahan and Jen Varrone (New Paltz, NY) scored on an error for the final New Paltz run. Varrone went the distance on the mound giving up thirteen hits.

New Paltz will close their season this weekend as they travel to Plattsburgh Friday and Potsdam Saturday.
