Softball Loses Doubleheaders to Fredonia, Buff St.
FREDONIA, BUFFALO — The SUNY New Paltz women’s softball team dropped four conference games to Fredonia and Buffalo State this weekend. The losses sink the Hawks’ record to 1-23 and 0-10 in the conference.
In game one on Friday, the Hawks had trouble at the plate, getting just one hit from Wendy Del Orbe (Bronx, NY) in the first inning. Pitcher Jen Varrone (New Paltz, NY) kept the game close giving up eight hits on five runs.
In game two, the Hawks managed to get five runs on just two hits on the afternoon. Katie Monahan (Port Jefferson Station, NY) tripled in a run in the sixth, and Kristi Calvacca’s (Levittown, NY) groundout scored Monahan to tie the score at five. New Paltz was unable to hang on in the seventh though, as the Blue Devils got five runs and walked away with a 10-5 win. Del Orbe pitched 6 and 1/3 for the Hawks taking the loss. Del Orbe scattered four hits and gave up nine runs.
After uncooperative weather forced the Buffalo State/New Paltz doubleheader off the field Saturday, the two teams resumed play Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Hawks bats were again stagnant as they could only muster two hits all game from Liz Hock (Latham, NY) and Michelle Lever (Holbrook, NY). Jen Varrone took the loss, going four innings giving up ten runs on ten hits.
In game two, the Bengals jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings so the Hawks were forced to play catch-up the entire game. Katie Monahan got one back in the 4th on a solo homerun and Tiffany Danko (Goshen, NY) doubled home Lisa Mason (Camillus, NY) in a four-run inning for New Paltz. The Hawks got one more in the fifth but got no closer and lost 13-5. Del Orbe took the loss pitching 1 and 2/3 innings giving up eight runs on four hits.
The Hawks will next play Hunter at home Tuesday at 3:00pm.
