Skidmore Escapes With Two Wins Over Hawks
NEW PALTZ — The visiting Skidmore Thoroughbreds left New Paltz with two victories Wednesday over women’s softball.
In game one, the Hawks bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the first but could not hang on, losing 7-6. New Paltz got on the board when Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) doubled in Tiffany Danko (Goshen, NY), and got three more on Jen Varrone’s (New Paltz, NY) single. Skidmore began chipping away at the lead in the third as the Thoroughbreds got three runs in the inning and got two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, New Paltz tied the score at six when Jen Born (Walroth, NY) scored on an error and Danko scored on Schropfer’s sacrifice fly. In the top half of the seventh, Skidmore grabbed the lead on a 2-RBI double and took a two run lead into the bottom of the inning. Born’s sacrifice fly scored Val Blackman (Castle Creek, NY) to cut the lead to one with the tying run on base, but the final batter for the Hawks grounded out ending the game. Jen Varrone went the distance on the mound, giving up twelve hits and striking out three.
In game two, Skidmore broke open a one-run game in the top of the seventh and went on to a 7-2 win. New Paltz got both of their runs in the fifth inning. Tiffany Danko had an RBI single for the Hawks and Lisa Mason (Camillus, NY) scored on a Liz Hock (Latham, NY) fly out in the inning. Kristin Ackerman (Middletown, NY) surrendered twelve hits on the mound for New Paltz.
Women’s softball will be in action again Thursday at 3:00 when they host the Oneonta Red Dragons.
