Well-known civil rights attorney to speak at SUNY New Paltz about implications of war

NEW PALTZ — Michael Sussman, a well-known civil rights attorney, will speak at the State University of New York at New Paltz at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Sussman’s lecture, titled “The War in Afghanistan: An attack on Civil Liberties,” will address implications of the war in Afghanistan and the civil liberties of people in the United States. He will discuss the power of the government and media to mold public opinion, as well as potential strategies for encouraging public knowledge and debate.

“Sussman is an expert on civil liberties,” said Nancy Schniedewind, educational studies professor at SUNY New Paltz. “Hopefully, this lecture will stimulate discussion and activity on the part of the people to raise some issues and think how it will affect their lives.”

The lecture is sponsored by the 9/11 Response Planning Committee, which is comprised of SUNY New Paltz faculty, staff and students who plan programming to address issues raised by the September terrorist attacks and their aftermath.

The lecture will be held in the Coykendall Science Building Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. For further information, please contact Schniedewind, member of the 9/11 Response Planning Committee, at 257-2827.
