Oneonta Sweeps Men and Women’s Basketball
ONEONTA — New Paltz men and women’s basketball were both defeated Tuesday night in their opening conference games against Oneonta. The men’s team lost 61-54 and the women lost by a final of 57-50.
In the men’s game, the Hawks went into the locker room tied with Oneonta but the Red Dragons pulled away in the second half. Senior forward Pat Stirk (Milford, CT) led the Hawks with game-highs in points with 23 and rebounds with 16. Junior Danny Goldberg (New Rochelle, NY) was also in double figures with 11 points.
In the women’s game, the Hawks found themselves down by eight points at the half but came out in the second and limited the Red Dragons to just two field goals in twenty minutes. Oneonta finished the half shooting just 8% from the field. Unfortunately, the Hawks were only able to shave one point off their halftime deficit. Sophomore Maura McShane (East Rockaway, NY) led the Hawks with 15 points. Freshman Stephanie Russo (Northport, NY) chipped in 10 points and junior forward Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Both men and women’s teams play again this Saturday at Elting Gym against Potsdam with the women’s game beginning at 2:00 pm.
