Women’s Soccer Defeats Russell Sage
TROY — The Women’s Soccer Team exploded in the first half with three goals and hung on to defeat Russell Sage 3-2 Sunday to improve their record to 7-9.
Freshman forward Lauren Martone (Hastings, NY) scored twice in the opening half and Meredith Ventimiglia (Patchogue, NY) had a goal to lead New Paltz to a 3-0 lead at the break. Martone now has four goals in the Hawks’ last two matches and six on the season. Russell Sage made the game close late in the second half as Emily Swan and Sue McBride scored to draw within a goal. But the Hawks held off the late flurry for the 3-2 victory. New Paltz held the edge in shots on goal 17-16 and goalkeeper Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) made 12 saves in the match.
The Women’s Team returns to action Wednesday at home against Oneonta. The Red Dragons enter the match with a 34- game conference regular season winning streak.
